Why are maritime transport data collected?
Maritime transport data are collected in order to produce statistics on maritime transport. This is an essential information required by the national administrations as well as the European Commission (Directorate General VII « Transport ») in order to plan and develop the strategy for transport at national and European level. National statistical administrations as well as Eurostat produce periodic publications in all statistical sectors including transport.
The European Directive 95/64/EC establishes a harmonised framework for the collection of maritime statistics across the European Union. It defines the information to be periodically transmitted from each Member State to Eurostat, for the carriage of goods and passengers by sea. All Member States are concerned (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK) but Austria and Luxembourg which do not have sea traffic. More information and explanations on the Directive is available in the Library.
