In 2002 the GDP of the Brussels-Capital region amounted to 49 162.5 million euros, or 18.9% of the country's total GDP. Per capita gross value added at basic prices in the same year came to 44 502 euros, compared with a national figure of 22 442 euros. In 2002 the sector of real estate, leasing and business services totalled gross value added at basic prices of 11 131.5 million euros and with 25.4% of the regional total was the major contributor to regional GDP. The sector which made the smallest contribution (7.1. million euros) was the leather and footwear industry. Value-added in the case of financial activities came to 6 323.1 million euros (14.4% of regional GDP), and in case of general government amounted to 5 256.4 million euros (12% of the regional total).
Gross fixed capital formation at current prices totalled 8 360.5 million euros in the Brussels-Capital region in 2001 and thus accounted for 17% of the national figure. The sector where investment was highest that year was real estate, leasing and business services (3 223 million euros), with investment in financial activities amounting to about 1 660 million euros.
In 2002 the Brussels-Capital region provided jobs for 590 782 employees, or 17.1% of the employed labour force throughout the country. The sectors providing most jobs were general government (100 601 employees), real eastate, leasing and business services (79 127) and financial activities (66 760 salariés). The sectors providing fewest jobs were manufacture of wood and wood products (380 employees) and agriculture, hunting, forestry, fishing and fish-farming (418).
Disposable income per inhabitant in the Brussels-Capital region in 2002 amounted to 14 730.2 euros, close to the national average of 14 645.7 euros. Total remuneration was highest in the financial activities sector (4 471.9 million euros in 2001, compared with 3 660.4 million in 1995). Next came general government (4 290.6 million euros in 2001, compared with 3 230.3 million in 1995) and real estate, leasing and business services (4 074.5 million euros in 2001 and 2 681.5 million in 1995), while at the bottom of the list came agriculture, hunting, forestry, fishing and fish-farming (8.9 million euros in 2001, compared with 7.7 million in 1995) and manufacture of wood and wood products (10.6 million euros in 2001, compared with 13.7 million in 1995).
In 2001 the allocation of primary income account amounted to 18 653.7 million euros, i.e. an increase of 20.38% compared with 1995 (15 496.2 million euros). On the resources side it included remuneration of employees (12 649.8 million euros) and property income (3 053.6 million euros), and on the uses side it included property income (essentially interest payments). The secondary distribution of income account amounted to 23 347.4 million euros, compared with a figure of 19 459.2 million in 1995, i.e. an increase of 19.98%. On the resources side it included the primary income balance (18 211 million euros), social benefits other than social transfers in kind (4 574.3 million) and other current transfers (562.2 million), and on the uses side it included current taxes on income, wealth, etc (3 232 million euros), social contributions (4 788.5 million) and disposable income (14 308.8 million).
