Varied possibilties for students

During the school year 2000/2001, 253 993 pupils were enrolled in primary, lower and upper secondary schools. 90 586 of them attended primary school, 75 157 lower secondary schools and 88 250 upper secondary schools. Moreover, 22 402 students were registered in tertiary education.

The Technical University at Liberec has Departments of Machinery, Textile, Economy, Education, Achitecture, Mechanical Electronics, and Interdisciplinary Studies in Engineering. About 700 students graduated from the school between 1998 and 2000. Young people can also study at several secondary schools (Gymnasiums, secondary technical schools, vocational schools, integrated secondary schools and special schools). The city of Hradec Králové is a" university town". In 2000 the "University of Hradec Králové" was created. This consist of two faculties Pedagogical Faculty and Faculty of Information and Management. There are also two faculties of Charles University. The first - the Medical Faculty - was established in 1945 and later in 1970 the Pharmaceutical Faculty was established. J.E. Purkyne Military Medical Faculty is situated in the city. The approx. 4.000 students that attend these institutions regularly make the town the 6th largest educational center in the country. The emphasis on medical technologies is an important reason that a number of scientific conferences and symposia have been held here.

There are 287 inhabitants per 1 physician in the region. Almost 9 100 beds were available in 34 hospitals in the entire region in 2002.

Inhabitants of the Liberecky kraj and its visitors can enjoy cultural life in several institutions such as cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, castles, and chateaux. The new State Science Library in Liberec was partially funded by a European Commission PHARE development project and many prominent state and foreign officials were present at its opening ceremony. In 2002, there were 1 251 public libraries in the region, 93 museums and 14 galleries.

Lovers of sports find ideal conditions and facilities for many sports in the region. Football is the most popular game; children are trained from an early age. Tourism and many other sports are also engaged in. Cycling has become more and more popular not only with the inhabitants of the Liberecky kraj but foreigners increasingly come to experience the local natural beauty by bike too. One of the best areas for this activity is the Czech Paradise. People use the bicycle - so popular recently - to see many interesting natural places and historical monuments in all of the Liberecky kraj.
