Importance of services
There is a strong tradition of industrial production: wood-processing, glass-making, engineering, metallurgy; textile, furniture, and food processing industries. Industrial areas have been developed in the region in order to create more business opportunities (25 industrial zones). In the Jihomoravsky kraj, the main industrial area was machine industry. It was developing dynamically in places with a long tradition of its kind.
The region is exceptionally favourable to milk, potato, and rapeseed production. There is also a high production potential of forested areas.
In 2000, industry generated 41.5 % of the total gross value added of the region, while services represented 52 % (the second highest share in the country after Prague) and agriculture had a share over 6.5 % of the total gross value added of the region.
The region is favourably situated within the Czech Republic; between Prague and Brno, the region is intersected by the D1 highway and is easily accessible. In 2002, there were 217 kilometres of motorways in Jihovychod.
Tourism is important in the region
The region of Jihovychod is also an popular destination for tourists. In 2002, there were 491 hotels and similar establishments in the region with almost 24 020 bed places. The number of nights spent in the region exceeded 4.3 million in 2002 of which more than 80% were spent by residents. The major tourist destinations in the Vysocina kraj are the Jihlava Zoo; the Museum of Records and Curiosities, Pelhrimov; Sikluv Mlyn (American "Wild West"-style town) near Zvole nad Pernstejnem and the UNESCO monuments (in Telc, Trebic, Zelena Hora).
