Hannover - Population
The Hannover region is the most densely populated administrative district in Niedersachsen, with 240 inhabitants per km2. Between 1990 and 2003, its population grew by 5.3%. Foreigners make up 8.4% of the population, which is fairly high for Niedersachsen, but below the average for Germany as a whole. The region includes the capital, Hannover, which has about 517 000 inhabitants (mid-2003) and is Niedersachsen's biggest city, and its surrounding area. Hildesheim (population: about 103 00) and Hameln (59 000), both situated to the south of Hannover, enjoy supra-regional importance and celebrity.
