KOEBENHAVNS AMT - Geography and history
The county of Copenhagen is situated on Zealand Island, and borders the county of Frederiksborg to the north-west and the county of Roskilde to the south-west. It occupies an area of 526 km2, representing 1.2% of the total area of Denmark. It is made up of 18 municipalities, most of them quite large by Danish standards. The county surrounds the two metropolitan municipalities, Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. The two cities are not included in the county of Copenhagen as they have both a municipal and county status.
