ROSKILDE - Population

With a population of 236 200 people at the beginning of 2003, Roskilde accounts for a 4.4% share of the Danish population. Its population has increased by 8.8% since 1990, which is one of the highest increases amongst the regions of Denmark.

The population density, of 265 inhabitants per km2, is high compared to the national average of 125 inhabitants per km2.

The population structure shows a share of young people (under 25) equal to 30% of the population (in 2003), in line with the national average, whereas the share of old people (over 65), equal to 12%, is below the national average. The birth rate, of 11.7 per thousand (in 2002), is again in line with the national average, whereas the death rate, of 8.9 per thousand, is the lowest amongst the Danish regions. This leads to a positive national growth of the population. The infant mortality, of 3.5 per thousand live births, is again lower than the national figure.

In 2002, 1 764 persons moved into the region from countries outside Denmark, and 1 327 persons moved the other way. At the same time, 9 782 persons moved to other regions of Denmark, and 9 536 moved into the region from other regions. The overall result was a very low positive balance (of almost 700 persons).

At the beginning of 2003, 9 300 persons with foreign nationality were resident in the region (a 4% share of the total population), with an increase of 48% since 1990.
