BORNHOLM - Population
The population of Bornholm was equal to 44 thousand persons in 2003, or 0.8% of the total Danish population, with a 4% decrease since 1990. It is in fact the only Danish region registering a fall in its population.
The population density was equal to 75 inhabitants per km2 (in 2003), one of the lowest among the Danish regions.
The population structure shows a relatively "old" population compared to the national average: the share of young people (under 25) is equal to 27% of the population, whereas the share of old people (over 65) is equal to 19% of the population, the highest amongst the Danish regions. The birth rate, of 8 per thousand in 2002, is the lowest in Denmark, whereas the death rate, of 14 per thousand, is the highest, and this leads to a negative natural balance of the population (births - deaths). The infant mortality rate was equal to 2.5 per thousand live births in 1999, the lowest in Denmark, where the national average was of 4.3 per thousand.
In 2002, 300 persons moved into the region from countries outside Denmark, and 200 persons moved the other way. At the same time, 1 300 persons moved to other regions of Denmark, and 1 400 moved into the region from other regions. The overall result was a positive, although low, net migration, of 80 persons.
At the beginning of 2003, 1 500 residents with foreign nationality were registered in the region (a 3% share of the total population), with an increase of 251% since 1990.
