VEJLE - Population
The population of Vejle was equal to 353 thousand persons in 2003, or 6.6% of the total Danish population, with a 6.9% increase since 1990.
The population density is just below the national average, with 118 inhabitants per km2 (in 2003).
The population structure shows a share of young people (under 25) equal to 31% of the population and of old people (over 65) equal to 15% of the population; the first figure is slightly above the national one. The birth and death rates, of 12 per thousand and 11 per thousand respectively in 2002, correspond to the national average, and lead to a positive natural balance of the population (births - deaths). The infant mortality rate was equal to 4.9 per thousand live births in 1999, slightly above the national average.
In 2002, 3 000 persons moved into the county from countries outside Denmark, and 2 200 persons moved the other way. At the same time, 10 900 persons moved to other counties of Denmark, and 10 400 moved into the county from other counties. The overall result was a positive net migration of 1 300 persons.
At the beginning of 2003, 14 100 residents with foreign nationality were registered in the county (a 4% share of the total population), with an increase of 141% since 1990.
