Gross value added in the county of Aarhus accounts for 10.7% of the total value added in Denmark (2002 data, current prices). The services sector makes up for around three quarters of it, the secondary sector for 23%, and the primary sector for the remaining 2% share, in line with the national average.

The productivity per person employed, calculated in terms of the gross value added produced, was equal to Euro 55 thousand in the year 2000, which was below the national average.

The county of Aarhus is the site of some of the largest business enterprises in Denmark. Commercial activity within the county ranges from heavy industry, i.e. the production of trains, shipbuilding etc., to light industry, i.e. fashion and woodwork, agriculture and nurseries. The county is also a major centre for service industries of all kinds.

With 5 389 farms in the region's agriculture, the most bred animals are pigs and poultry.

Transport

There are 15 333 km of roads in Aarhus (2001 data), of which 94 km motorways, representing 9.7% of the total length of motorways in Denmark. 266 thousand vehicles were registered in 2001, of which 217 thousand were private cars.

There is a rail link that provides regular connections from the county to the rest of Denmark, and several domestic and international ferry routes. As far as sea transport is concerned, 4.7 million tonnes of goods were loaded and 7.4 million tonnes were unloaded in 2001 in the region.

The county has air services to the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, and many other large cities in Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
