AARHUS - Geography and history
The county of Aarhus occupies an area of 4 561 km2, representing 10.6% of the total area of Denmark. It is situated on the mainland territory of Denmark and borders the counties of Vejle to the south, of Ringkoebing and Viborg to the west and North Jutland to the north.
There are 26 local authorities in the County of Aarhus, and these include both the second-largest city in Denmark, Aarhus, with its population of 282 000, and some of the smallest municipalities in the country, with as few as 5 000 citizens.
The countryside has flat agricultural land, heather-clad hills forged by the last Ice Age, and innumerable traces of its forefathers in the forms of burial mounds, stone barrows and caches of weapons. There are furthermore lakes both large and small, along with low hills, winding streams and the longest river in Denmark, the Gudena, which has supported life in the region for millennia.
