AARHUS - Population
The population of Aarhus was equal to 649 thousand persons at the beginning of 2003, or 12.1% of the total Danish population, with an 8.7% increase since 1990. The population density is of 142 inhabitants per km2 (in 2003), compared to a national average of 125.
The population structure shows a share of young people (under 25) equal to 31% of the population, and of old people (over 65) equal to 13% of the population. The latter is 2 percentage points below the national average. The birth rate, of 13 per thousand in 2002, is just above the national figure, whereas the death rate, of 10 per thousand, is slightly below it. This leads to a positive natural balance of the population (births - deaths). The infant mortality rate was equal to 4.6 per thousand live births in 1999, very slightly above the national average.
In 2002, 7 000 persons moved into the region from countries outside Denmark, and 5 800 persons moved the other way. At the same time, 17 900 persons moved to other regions of Denmark, and 16 600 moved into the region from other regions. The overall result was a positive net migration of 2 500 persons.
At the beginning of 2003, 28 100 residents with foreign nationality were registered in the region (a 4% share of the total population), with an increase of 81% since 1990.
