The region Île-de-France and within it Paris, of course, has an enormous wealth of cultural assets, which are famous worldwide. The region ranks first in terms of registered historical monuments with 3 658 historical monuments in 2000. The region had 77 museums in 2000, placing it third on the national scale after the regions Provence-Alpes-Cotes d´Azur and Rhone-Alpes.

The region had a slightly lower number of cinema halls operating and cinema seats per 100 000 inhabitants in 2000 than the national average with 8.1 halls and 1 713 seats per 100 000 inhabitants. In terms of cinema admissions, however, the region far out ways any other region, with 50.5 million admissions in 2000 i.e. 30% of total admissions in metropolitan France.

For the academic year 2000-2001 there were 2.8 million people enrolled in the educational system in the region Île-de-France. Of these 555 900 were students, which means that more than a quarter of all France´s students study in Île-de-France. Between 1990 and 2000 the average annual growth rate of the students was one of the lowest of all the regions with 1.4%, compared to the national average of 2.5%. 68.6% of students were enrolled in universities in 2000-2001.

The number of hospital beds per 1 000 inhabitants was below the national average by 1 point with 7.0 beds per 1 000 inhabitants in 2001. This number is 6.7% lower than in 1998, whereas nationally the number fell by 3.5%. In 2000 with 4.2 physicians per 1 000 inhabitants Île-de-France had the greatest number of physicians per 1 000 inhabitants in France.
