KENTRIKI MAKEDONIA - Population

Substantial migration

The population of Central Macedonia grew by 7.6% between 1990 and 2000. This increase was due mainly to internal migration from a number of rural areas in northern Greece to Central Macedonia in general and to the Thessaloniki area in particular. The development of industry and tourism has resulted in an even greater influx, and the region is now home to some 17% of Greece's total population. Around 1 000 000 people live in the city of Thessaloniki. More births than deaths have been registered every year since 1990.

In 2000, 29% of the region's population was under the age of 25, and 16% was over 65. The trend is towards a stable birth rate (slightly above the national average) and an ageing population.
