IONIA NISIA - Population
Population retained thanks to tourism
The population of the region has increased somewhat more over the last 10 years than that of the country as a whole. In 2000 there were 206 300 inhabitants, 10% more than in 1990. In contrast to a fall in the population of the nomos of Levkada, the others show a steady increase, mainly due to the development of tourism.
The nomos of Kerkira is one of the most densely populated in the country. The same pattern of scattered settlements heavily dependent on major towns is also found in the other nomi, with the exception of Lefkada.
Since 1971 there has been a gradual decline in emigration, with a corresponding increase in returning emigrants. The outflow of population from the region, mainly towards Athens and Patras, has been stemmed to a certain extent by the development of tourism. The distribution of population within the region remains a serious problem, since there is continuing internal migration towards the towns. Every year since 1990 the number of deaths exceeded the number of births. Together with Voreio Aigaio, the region registered in 1999 the lowest number of live births in the country: 1 700.
Over the last decade there were not registered very important changes in the age structure of the population, in 2000 the share of young people under 25 being 28% and of the population over 65 about 20%.
