STEREA ELLADA - Population

An ageing society despite a rising population

The population total for Sterea Ellada was 662 300 in 2000, having risen rapidly earlier in the 1990?s, before stabilizing for the last five years of the decade.

Immigration has declined from 1 168 000 in 1990, to 517 000 in 1998 (-56%). The birth rate is also slowly falling, reaching 6.7 per thousand in 1999, while the death rate remained relatively stable around 9 per thousand. The population density of the region has increased correspondingly from 34.4 people per km2 in 1980 to 42.6 in 1999. Infant mortality at 25 per thousand is half the national average (56 per thousand), and more than 4 times less than the rate for Kentriki Makedonia.

In 2000, 27% of the region's population was under the age of 25, and 19% was over 65. The ageing of the population is a visible danger for the region as a whole, but more particularly for the 'problem' (i.e. mountainous) areas, which are turning by the day into 'geriatric communities' with no prospects for the future.
