ATTIKI - Population

One third of Greece lives in Attica

In 2000 the total population of the region was 3 451 300, representing 33% of the population of the country.

Between 1981 and 1991 the population growth at 4.5% was lower than the national average (5.3%).

Between 1990 and 2000 the population of Attica declined (with small recoveries in 1998 and 2000) while that of the country as a whole was gradually increasing. However, the decline was only of 2.3%. More births than deaths were registered every year since 1990, but the population decline was due to the deterioration in the environment and the quality of life, as well as to the improvements achieved in the other regions in recent years. The birth rate in 1999 (10.6) was above the country?s average at 9.6, while the death rate was the same as for the whole country (9.9).

The number of young people (under 25) fell by 5% and the population over 65 increased by 3% over the period 1991-2000.
