NOTIO AIGAIO - Education, health and culture During the school year 1999/2000, 37 381 pupils were enrolled in primary, lower and upper secondary schools: 20 124 of them attended primary school, 10 735 lower secondary schools and 6 522 upper secondary schools. There were 724 physicians and doctors in 2001 in the region, with a rate of 2.6 per thousand inhabitants (one of the lowest amongst the regions). The number of nursing staff was 934 in 1998, whereas the number of hospital beds per thousand inhabitants in 1999 was 5.1 (above the national average).
