NOTIO AIGAIO - Population
Large population increase in tourist areas
Between 1990 and 2000, the region's population increased by 10%, reaching 274 100, but in tourist area it soared by 50% or more. In 2000, 32% of the region's population was under the age of 25, and 15% was over 65. The trend is towards a decreasing birth rate and an ageing population. The birth rate was 11.4 per thousand in 1999, against 8.9 for the death rate. The number of immigrants had decreased during the second half of the 1990?s.
The population of the non-tourist areas of the region has remained stationary over the past 10 years. The small islands have found it particularly difficult to maintain their population levels.
The average population density is 52 per km2. The breakdown of population shows that the inhabitants have settled mainly in the three large urban centres (Rhodes, Kos and Ermoupoli) and the six semi-urban centres (Kalymnos, Naxos, Paros, Tinos, Mykonos and Santorini).
