GYOR-MOSON-SOPRON - Population

The population of Gyor-Moson-Sopron county was 439 050 at the beginning of 2003. This represents an increase of 1.6% compared to 1998, which is the second most important growth rate in the country after Pest over this period. However, this increase has not been the result of a natural increase of the population: the number of deaths exceeded the number of births every year since 1990. Thus, the growth of the population was due to the significant positive migration observed during this period. In 2003, Gyor-Moson-Sopron was the seventh most populated county in Hungary, with 4.3% of the total national population.

There were 104 inhabitants per square kilometres in 2003 in the county, and Gyor-Moson-Sopron was at the fourth position with regards to population density, even though it remained slightly under that of Hungary as a whole (109 inhabitants per square kilometres).

In 2002, the age structure of the population in Gyor-Moson-Sopron county was comparable to that observed nationally, with a share of young people (under 25) of 30% of the total population and a share of elderly people (over 65) at 15% of the total population.

The birth rate in Gyor-Moson-Sopron in 2002 (9.2 per thousand inhabitants) was lower compared to the national average (9.5 per thousand population) and was the seventh lowest birth rate comparing with the other counties. The same year, the death rate (11.9 per thousand population) was the third lowest in the country while the national average was of 13.1 per thousand population. The infant mortality rate was 7.0 per thousand live births in the county in 2002 compared to the national average of 7.2 per thousand live births.

As a result of internal migration, population of Gyor-Moson-Sopron county increased by 1 670 persons in 2002. International migration was also favourable in the county in 2002: international migration inflows exceeded outflows with 1 000. Since Gyor-Moson-Sopron county is one of the most attractive areas of Hungary for foreigners, this county is the second most important destination following Pest county in terms of migration.

Life expectancy in 2002 was 77.1 years for women and 69.5 years for men in the county. These values are equal to and over Western Transdanubia?s regional averages of 77.1 and 68.8 years, respectively.
