KUJAWSKO-POMORSKIE VOIVODSHIP - Population
In 2001 Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodship had a population of 2 101.7 thousand residents, corresponding to 5.4% of Poland?s total population. Average population density in the region was 117 persons per km2. The urban population accounted for 62.1% of the total population. Among the 52 cities in the voivodship, 21 have populations exceeding 10 thousand, including Bydgoszcz, Torun, Wloclawek, and Grudziadz with populations of more than 100 thousand
Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship is one of the regions where the natural increase is higher than the national average, but a clear decline in the number of births has been evident for several years (24.9 thousand in 1995, 21.0 thousand in 2001). The pace of natural increase of the population is systematically slowing. In comparison with 1995, the rate of natural increase per 1 000 population declined more than 2-fold and amounted to 0.9. A decline in the number of deaths has been noted in recent years (from 20.7 thousand in 1995 to 19.1 thousand in 2001).
Despite the fact that, as in the rest of the country, the region?s population is slowly ageing, in relation to other regions the population of Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodship is young. The share of the population below the age of 25 in the total population was 36.0% (national average 35.1%). However, the percentage of older people (i.e., 65 and more) was 11.6% (national average 12.5%). Per 100 people of working age there were 61 people of non-working age (national average 62).
In 1998-2001, negative net internal and foreign migrations for permanent residence were noted in Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodship. In 2001, as a result of migration, the population of the voivodship declined 1 426.
