OPOLSKIE VOIVODSHIP - Population
In 2001, Opole Voivodship had a population of 1 080.5 thousand residents (a decline of 7.8 thousand in relation to 1999). The region had a population density of 115 persons per km2 (national average - 124 persons). The population in urban areas accounted for 52.3% of the total population (61.7% in the country).
The phenomenon of a declining natural increase is observed in the region. In 2001, the natural increase per 1 000 population was negative (minus 0.2); while in 1995 it amounted to 1.1. The ratio of live births per 1 000 population was the lowest noted in Poland (8.2 against a national average of 9.5). The number of deaths per 1 000 population (8.4) and infant deaths per 1 000 live births (6.7) are also among the lowest in the country (9.4 and 7.7, respectively).
In relation to 1995, the number of contracted marriages declined 0.5 thousand, and the number of contracted marriages per 1 000 population (4.4) is the lowest in the country. In 2001, 1.3 thousand couples divorced (i.e., 264 more than in 1995). The number of divorces in Opole Voivodship calculated per 1 000 population is equal to the national average (1.2).
In relation to 1995, the voivodship noted the country's largest decline (10.8%) in the population below the age of 25 (a decline of 8.3% in the country) and the largest growth in the population aged 65 and more (21.5% against 11.5% in the country). For every 100 people of working age, there were 60 people of non-working age.
The negative balance of net of internal and international migration for permanent residence increased from minus 3 064 in 1995 to minus 3 765 in 2001, and the ratio per 1 000 population (minus 3.5) was the lowest in the country. In relation to 1998, the number of people migrating abroad increased almost twofold, while net foreign migrations for permanent residence in 2001 was negative, amounting to minus 3.5 thousand.
