PODLASKIE VOIVODSHIP - Population
Podlaskie Voivodship had a population of 1 219.9 thousand residents in 2001, corresponding to 3.2% of Poland?s total population. In comparison to 1995, the population declined 0.2%. There were 60 people for every km2, which placed the region in the group of voivodships with the lowest population density. 58.6% of the population lived in urban areas and, in comparison to 1995, the urban population has increased significantly (2.5% against a national average of minus 0.1%). Females accounted for almost 51% of the total population, and 104 females for every 100 males, the lowest in the country. The voivodship is characterised by a larger share of the population above the age of 25 than the national average (36.4% against 35.1% in the country). Bialystok, the capital of the region, had a population of more than 286 thousand, 23.5% of the voivodship?s total population. Among the other cities in the region, only two (Lomza and Suwalki) had population?s exceeding 65 thousand, while the majority of urban areas are small, with populations of less than 15 thousand residents.
More than 59% of the region?s population is of working age. In recent years, the share of this age group has increased, while the share of the pre-working age population has declined. This phenomenon is a consequence of the systematically declining number of births. The declining number of births as well as a high level of deaths are the reasons for the negative natural increase noted in 2001.
Net migration in the region has been negative for a number of years. Migrations primarily involve an outflow of the population from rural areas not only to cities of the region, but also to other voivodships and abroad.
