POMORSKIE VOIVODSHIP - Population

The population of the voivodship accounted for 5.7% of the country?s total population (8th most populated voivodship in the country). Pomorskie Voivodship is a region with an average population density (121 persons/km2) and a significant degree of urbanisation (68.2% of the population live in urban areas, including 34.1% in the Tri-cities). The largest concentration of the population is located in the central belt of the voivodship. The northern portion of the voivodship is the least populated, which is mainly connected with the extensive agricultural and forest areas located there as well as with the low degree of urbanisation.

The pre-working age population accounts for almost one fourth of the voivodship?s total population, while more than 62% of the population is of working age. The most rapid growth has been observed in the post-working age group for a number of years. In 2001, for every 100 people of working age there were 60.3 people of non-working age.

The annual rate of increase in the population has remained steady since 1995, amounting to 0.3%. The growth in the population results from the positive balance of internal and international migration as well as the quite high level of natural increase. The ratio of natural increase has remained higher than the national average for a number of many years.

The voivodship is one of four Polish regions noting positive net migration. Although the mobility of the residents in this area is generally low, the greatest outflow of the population occurred in areas characterised by the highest unemployment rate.

Among the subregions of Pomorskie Voivodship, the Gdansk-Gdynia-Sopot subregion is characterised by a large concentration of the population within a small area (1 814 persons/ km2). The most densely populated area (almost 2-times more than Slupski subregion) is the Gdanski subregion (961.3 thousand residents). In comparison with 2000, the number of population has declined only in the Gdansk-Gdynia-Sopot subregion (0.2%) due to the natural decline in the population and negative net migration. The largest increase in the population is noted in the Gdanski subregion (0.7%).
