The North-East Region - Population
The population of the North-East Region was 3 823 492 as of 1 July 2000, which is 17% of total Romanian population. By population, the North-East Region is the first among the 8 development regions, and the second by population density (103.8 population/km2), after the region of Bucharest.
The contradictory evolution of the demographic phenomena resulted in the change of the age structure of population, a reduction of the young population and increase of the old population. Between 1996 and 2000, the share of the population aged 65 and above increased from 11.6% to 12.7%. This evolution shows the accelerated aging process of the population, with a negative implication on the economy and society.
The average age of the population in the North-East Region was 35.6 in 2000, the lowest average among the 8 development regions.
The birth rate in 2000 was 13.0 per 1 000 inhabitants, 23.8% higher than the national average, while the mortality rate was 10.5 per 1 000 inhabitants in the same year. This determined a positive natural increase of 2.5 persons per 1 000 inhabitants, the North-East Region being the only region with a positive natural increase of the population. The infant mortality was 23.0 deaths (of children under 1 year) per 1 000 live births, the highest among all regions.
The marriage rate was 6.4 per 1 000 inhabitants in 2000, and the divorce rate was 1.52 per 1 000 inhabitants.
The life expectancy between 1998 and 2000 was 67.5 years for males and 74.2 years for females, which is above the national average for both males and females.
