The South Region - Employment
Labour force
Between 1996 and 2000, the active population of the South Region decreased. At the end of 2000, the civil active population accounted for 1 444.4 thousand persons, representing 15.0% of the country's active population. The global activity rate was, at the end of 2001, 41.5% (43.5% in 1996), and the activity rate of labour force was 72.1%.
The employed civilian population also decreased, accounting for 1 293.8 thousand persons in 2000 , 10.1% lower compared to 1996. The rate of employment was 37.2%, and the activity rate was 64.6% (70.8% in 1996).
At the end of 2000, 48.5% of the employed civil population worked in agriculture and forestry, 26.1% in industry and constructions and 25.4% in trade and social services.
During the period 1996-2000, the structure of the employed population had an increasing trend in agricultural activities and a decreasing trend in those with an industrial character. In the field of services it had an oscillatory evolution with a slight increasing trend.
The female share in the employed civil population was 47.8%, at the end of 2000 (45.4% in 1996).
The 2000 labour force households survey showed that the most important share in the total employed population is held by persons of 35-49 years, who represented 30.6%, followed by those of 25-34 years (25.9%) and 50-64 years (20.8%).
The young population, 15-24 years old, represented 10.5% of the employed population.
The employed population with higher education represented 6.3%, that with postgraduate education, technical and high-school education 33.2 %, and that with vocational education, and apprentice and secondary education 41.1%. The difference of 19.4% represented the persons with primary education or without completed education.
The economic unbalances in the transition period to a market economy also influenced the phenomenon of unemployment.
The number of registered unemployed persons, at the end of 2000, was 150.7 thousand persons, representing 15% of the total unemployed persons registered at a national level.
The unemployment rate was 10.4%, calculated in relation with the active civil population as of 1.01.2001.
As of the same date, females represented 44.2% of the total number of registered unemployed persons, with an unemployment rate of 9.7% (6.3% in 1996). The unemployment rate for males was 11%, at the end of 2000, (5% in 1996).
Income of population
The total income of households in 2000 was 1 179.5 thousand lei per month and person. The monthly income per person was 1 361.2 thousand lei in employees households, 947.8 thousand lei in farmers households, 802.9 thousand lei in unemployed persons households and 1 189.7 thousand lei, in households with retired persons.
Of the total household income, 66.1% represents monetary income, of which 32.9% is from salaries, bonuses, benefits, 3.4% from own account activities, 4.7% from sales of goods, constructions, lands, 21.9% from social allowances, 0.7% being the equivalent of free or discounted services received from economic agents and 33.2% the equivalent of agricultural products consumed from own resources.
The average net monthly salary in 2000 was 2 076.9 thousand lei, 2.9% under the national average (4th position among the 8 regions).
The total expenses of the households are 1 161.8 thousand lei per month and person. The monthly expenses per person were 1 310.3 thousand lei in employees households, 957.5 thousand lei in peaseants households, 808.7 thousand lei in unemployed persons households and 1 181 thousand lei in households with retired persons.
From the total expenses, food and drink represented 22%, non-food 17.1%, payment of services 12.4%, taxes, charges, contributions, and subscriptions had a share of 5.1%, and 33.7% represent the consumption of agricultural products from own resources.
