Gross domestic product
The Bucharest Region, strongly represented by the capital of the country, registered an increase of the gross domestic product share from 14.6% in 1996 to 17.4% in 1999, being in the 1st position among the eight development regions.
The industry and services had an important contribution for the creation of the regional gross value added in 1999, with 92.8%, representing an increase of 4.3 percentage points compared to 1996. This fact is also emphasised by the big share of the emplyed population in the Bucharest Region working in this sectors.
In the Bucharest Region the share of the gross value added for construction and services in the region's gross value added was in 1999 higher than the national level.
The regional gross domestic product per inhabitant was 41 486 213 lei in 1999, compared to 6 871 901 lei per inhabitant in 1996, which brought the Bucharest Region in the first position from this points of view.
Economy
The economy of the Region is marked by the specific activities of the capital city - the Bucharest Municipality, as well as by those of Ilfov County. Thus Bucharest municipality is characterised by various activities, especially by the dominance of the second and third sectors. County Ilfov is predominantly agricultural, being a consequence of the neighbouring big towns. The economic domain of the capital is attractive for foreign and Romanian investors, due to the existing institutional structure, to the well trained working people, and well developed infrastructure in comparison to other regions of the country.
In Bucharest Municipality a great number of companies with foreign private capital and institutions of national importance are located. Thus, the average nominal incomes in 2000 were of 2 774.5 thousand lei, 29.7% higher than the national average. The highest monthly net average nominal incomes are obtained in the branch of the financial activities, banking, and assurances (in 2000 values of 7 519.2 thousand lei per employee were recorded) and in posts and telecommunication activities (5 222.4 thousand lei per employee in 2000). The same branches also record the highest increase of the real incomes (248% in the financial activities, banking and assurances and 172.5% in posts and telecommunication activities).
The Bucharest Region has a high natural potential, according to the good quality solutions, climate, but also to the very special commodity market of which this zone benefits (next to the biggest city of Romania, the capital of the country).
In 2000, the agricultural production even if 1.5% of the agricultural production of the country, was obtained in a share of 73.1% in the private sector.
The grain production of the Bucharest Region was 90.6 thousand tons in 2000, and the corn one was 16.2 thousand tons. There were obtained 8.2 thousand tons of sunflower and 91.6 thousand tons of vegetables. One can notice that, even if it has no important share in the wheat and rye production of the country, a production per hectare of 2 471 kg, over the national average (2 280 kg per hectare) was obtained in the Bucharest Region.
In 2000 the livestock included 23 thousand cattle, 138 thousand pigs and 25 thousand sheep and goats. The Ilfov County ranked the 1st in the average cow and milk production and the 10th in the average eggs production.
The Bucharest Region is an important industrial centre and a significant varnishes and paints producer (33.7% of the national production), ready-to-eat meat products (25.1%), footwear (23.9%) and others.
In 2000, in the Bucharest Region, 66 163 local units were functional and recorded the following structure: 10.1% industrial units, 4.3% units for construction activities, 65.1% trading units, 19.3% services units, 0.2% transportation and storing units, 0.2% chattel transaction units. As a result of the privatisation and restructuring policy, and also of the initiated measures for supporting small enterprises, 88.5% of the units activated in the Bucharest Region and had the status of micro-enterprises (up to 9 employees) and only 0.6% are big enterprises (more than 249 employees). The small and medium sized enterprises (SME) had an accelerated development, so that in 2000 there were 34 SMEs per 1 000 inhabitants (almost twice than the national average). The increase recorded by the private sector is reflected by another fact, too: between 1990 and 2000 in the Bucharest Region almost a quarter of the total number of societies, Limited Company type, from the whole country, entities with full private capital were registered.
A separate branch of the region is represented by the movie industry at Buftea.
The communication lines of the Bucharest Region territory are bounded to all the railways lines belonging to the great railway through routes (Bucharest - Ploiesti - Brasov - Cluj - Oradea; Bucharest - Ploiesti - Buzau - Suceava; Bucharest - Fetesti - Constanta; Bucharest - Rosiorii de Vede - Craiova - Timisoara) or the great road through routes which starts radial from the capital towards the whole country.
At the end of 2000, the railway density was 194.4 km per 1 000 km2 of territory (46.2 km per 1 000 km2 at a national level), and the public roads density was 45.2 km per 100 km2 territory (32.9 km per 100 km2 in all country).
On the Bucharest Region' territory is located the largest country's airport (the International Otopeni Airport), which ensures the capital's flight lines with many towns or capitals from other countries from all the continents.
The tourist accommodation capacity as of 31July 2000 was 7 929 places, of which 7 568 places in hotels and motels.
The new hotel constructions, also the arrangements and modernisations already existing, provide the Romanian and foreign tourist with the possibility to benefit of the most modern comfort conditions and facilities, being able to go rapidly both among the local tourism and resting zones, the monasteries and lakes around the capital, having rich historical meanings and among the farthermost places, toward the mountain zones or the Black Sea seaside.
Also, the quality of the provided services makes this region an optimal place for the organisation of great manifestations.
Every year, international markets take place here, distinguished by the number and importance of the participating companies, either we are talking about industrial products and trading or tourism and books.
