The Bucharest Region - Population
The Bucharest Region, which includes in its territorial administration the most important political, economic, social and cultural centre of the country, is remarkable due to its highest concentration of population, having a density of 1 254.6 inhabitants/km2. From the 2 284 682 inhabitants of the Bucharest Region in 2000, 88.8% lived in urban areas (87.9% represent the Bucharest Municipality and only 0.9% the Buftea and Otopeni towns), while the rest of 11.2% lived in the communes and villages of Ilfov County.
The young population (0-24 years) had in 2000 a share of 30.6%, under the national level, a decrease as compared to 1996 (33%).
Population aged 65 and over had a share of 13.7% compared to 13.3 % for the whole country; an aging process of the population took place compared to 1996 (12.8% of population aged 65 and over). The average age of the population of the Bucharest Region was 38.8 years, being the region with the highest population average age.
The birth rate in 2000 was 8.0 live births per 1 000 inhabitants, much under the national average. The overall mortality of 11.1 deaths per 1 000 inhabitants in 2000 determined a negative natural growth of 3.1 per 1 000 inhabitants (-0.9 at a country level). The infant mortality was 12.9 deaths of children under 1 year per 1 000 live births, the region having the lowest level of the infant mortality.
In 2000 the marriage rate was 6.6 marriages per 1 000 inhabitants, and the divorce rate was 1.27 divorces per 1 000 inhabitants.
The life expectancy between 1998 and 2000 was 68.5 years for males and 75.7 years for females, over national average for both males and females.
