NOTRANJSKO - KRAŠKA - Education, health and culture
World leader in karst research
During the 2001/2002 school year, 7 059 pupils were enrolled in primary, lower and upper secondary schools: 2 087 of them attended primary school, 2 354 lower secondary schools and 2 618 upper secondary schools.
The small population of the Notranjsko-kraška region and the relatively short distance between the regional centre Postojna and Ljubljana are the main reasons for the lack of educational, health, cultural and similar institutions in the region.
Almost all of these activities are concentrated in Postojna where a high-school centre, with a grammar school, forestry and carpentry departments and other colleges with vocational education programmes, is located.
The Karst Research Institute in Postojna, a constituent part of the Scientific-Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, is one of the most important karst research institutes in the world. It was established in 1947 on the basis of the pre-war Italian National Speleological Institute.
There is a small maternity hospital in Postojna, too. Cultural activities are rather modest, and apart from some lively amateur dramatics, only the Notranjska Museum in Postojna is worth mentioning.
