The application of the treaty instituting the European Union (EU), the completion of the single market and greater co-operation with countries of Central and Eastern Europe require an effective system of information on official statistics. Thus the STNE Working Group has instigated various initiatives to try to make the collection, processing and dissemination of statistics easier, more timely and cost effective. At present, the work of the STNE Working Group is concerned with five priority areas which undertake various projects. These are:

• Raw Data Collection projects which extend and prototype the use of electronic data interchange messages for raw data collection. Successful attempts have also been made to integrate electronic questionnaires into administrative procedures.

• Dissemination Environment and Multimedia Highway projects which attempt to establish an attractive, understandable, timely and readily available dissemination environment for end users of statistics.
  
• Exchange of Statistical Data and Electronic Data Interchange projects which concentrate on developing special messages to support the exchange of statistical information. At present messages have been developed using EDIFACT syntax but now there are moves to examine new technologies such as Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA).
  
• European Reference Environment and DSIS Metadata projects which aim to provide a reliable source of statistical data for statisticians at regional, national and European levels. Statisticians will have harmonised meaning through the use of agreed metadata.
  
• Ediflow project which is compiling an inventory of all the dataflows between Member states and Eurostat.
