(Gross earnings in Europe 2002)
What is to be seen?

This interactive element visualises core results of the Structure of Earnings Survey 2002 (SES 2002). The visualisation is carried out by means of bar charts and boxplots. It refers to a comparison of earnings as well as of hours paid between 27 European countries and 9 different economic activities. The comparison of earnings is either in euro or in PPS (Purchase Power Standards).

How to use this interactive element?

The navigation of this interactive element is carried out by means of the menu windows in connection with the "View" function. The "View" function enables the user to change the perspective on the data.

View: This button opens access to different presentations using bar charts and boxplots. The numerical value defining a bar and the variables defining the extreme values of a boxplot can be displayed by locating the mouse on the top of the bar and the extremes of the boxplot, respectively.

Bar charts I: Comparison of gross earnings (hourly, monthly or annual) in either euro or PPS between 27 countries for a user-selected economic activity. The bars can be sorted by descending order.

Bar charts II: Comparison of gross earnings (hourly, monthly or annual) in either euro or PPS between 12 economic activities (9 NACE sections and 3 NACE aggregates) for two user-selected countries.

Bar charts III: Comparison of gross hourly earnings in euro by sex in absolute terms and as a ratio (women’s earnings in % of men’s earnings) for 27 countries and a user-selected economic activity. The bars can be sorted by descending order.

Bar charts IV: Comparison of hours paid in a reference month in 2002 for all 27 countries and a user-selected economic activity. The bars can be sorted by descending order.

Boxplots I: Comparison of the variability of gross earnings (hourly, monthly or annual) within the 9 NACE sections C, D, ..., K for each of the 27 countries (visualisation of within-country-variability, one boxplot per country). The economic activities linked to the extreme values of the boxplots can be displayed via mouse. The comparison is in either euro or PPS.

Boxplots II: Comparison of variability of gross earnings (hourly, monthly or annual) within 27 countries for each of the 9 NACE sections and 3 NACE aggregates C-F, G-K and C-K (one boxplot per NACE category). The comparison is in either euro or PPS. The 27 numerical values defining a boxplot can be shown in tabular form.

Zoom: Activation of this button generates an identical second window which can be enlarged, compressed or stretched. Zooming is useful for the presentation of the interactive element in front of a large audience.

Notes: This button opens access to background information on the survey and explains some abbreviations. The notes can be printed out by using the right-hand mouse button or the print function of the Windows navigation frame.
