Online publications
Advanced computer technologies offer fascinating new perspectives for online publications. Static text can be hyperlinked with user-friendly experimental working environments for exploratory data analysis of data sets or with Web sites in order to provide automatically updated information.
In order to illustrate the huge potential of interactive online publications for Eurostat, two experimental Statistics in Focus have been developed as a starting-point for internal discussions. This new type of SiF incorporates Java applets on gross earnings or hourly labour costs in European countries. The user may look at self-defined excerpts of the data sets from different perspectives by applying different graphical tools. The reference list gives access to existing "classical" online SiF publications.

Visualizing excerpts of Yearbooks and Pocketbooks
Interactive Java applets can also be used as a complement to offline publications, for example as an integral part of a CD belonging to a Eurostat Yearbook. In particular, they can serve as an "appetizer" and marketing tool for any printed publication, for example by giving online access to an interactive visualisation of excerpts of Eurostat pocketbooks.
